Dato' Namat Abdullah (born March 30, 1946 – died December 17, 2020) was a famous Malaysian footballer. He was known for his strong defense on the field. Namat was part of the Malaysian team that played in the 1972 Summer Olympics. This was a big achievement for Malaysian football.
Namat's Football Journey
Namat Abdullah was born in Butterworth, Penang. He started his football journey as a striker. In 1965, he helped his team, Penang, win the Burnley Cup. Later, he became a right-back, which is a player who helps protect the goal.
Namat played for the Malaysian national team in the 1972 Munich Olympics. He played in all three group games during the football competition. He also played for Malaysia in the qualifying matches for the 1974 World Cup.
For some time, Namat was the captain of the Penang FA team. In 1974, he led Penang to a great 2-1 victory. This win was in the Malaysia Cup final against Perak.
On May 11, 1975, Namat was part of a special team called the Malaysia Selection. They played a friendly match against the famous English club, Arsenal FC. Namat's team won the game 2-0 at Merdeka Stadium.
During his time playing for Malaysia, Namat played a total of 115 matches. This includes games against other national teams. He played 95 official international matches for Malaysia.
In 2003, he was honored as the Maal Hijrah Sports Figure by the Penang Malay Association. Later, in 2014, the sports magazine FourFourTwo listed him as one of the top 25 Malaysian footballers of all time.
Family Life
Namat Abdullah came from a football-loving family. His brother, Shahruddin Abdullah, also played for Penang. Their uncle, Aziz Ahmad, was also a footballer.
His Passing
Namat Abdullah passed away on December 17, 2020, at the age of 74. He died at his son-in-law's home in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. He had been battling intestinal cancer for a long time. His funeral was held the next day, on December 18, 2020.
