Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nan Ino Cooper (born June 13, 1880, died 1958) was an important British nurse and teacher. She also held special family titles, becoming the 10th Baroness Lucas and 6th Lady Dingwall.

Early Life and Learning

Nan Ino Herbert Cooper was born in Blandford, Dorset. Her parents were Auberon Edward William Molyneux Herbert and Florence Amabell Herbert. From a young age, Nan Ino was very interested in spiritual ideas. She followed a special spiritual movement called theosophy.

Helping Others and Education

Nan Ino Cooper was very generous. She gave away a house she owned in the New Forest. This house became a school for a spiritual group called the 'Universal Brotherhood'. In the early 1900s, she lived in Cuba. There, she was a director at the Cuba Raja Yoga School.

Lady Lucas also helped manage her family's large home, Wrest Park. She did this during the lifetime of her brother, Auberon Herbert, 9th Baron Lucas.

Before World War I started in 1914, Lady Lucas trained as a nurse. When the war began, she used her skills to help. She took charge of turning her family home, Wrest Park, into a hospital. This hospital cared for soldiers who were wounded in the war.

Family Collections and Donations

Lady Lucas inherited a huge collection of over 3,000 prints and drawings. These had been gathered by her relatives, Amabel Hume-Campbell, 1st Countess de Grey and Thomas de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey. She gave this amazing collection to the British Museum. This was done to honor her brother, who sadly died from injuries he got as a fighter pilot during World War I.

She kept another collection of items. These included things about the history of printmaking, like mezzotints and stipples. This collection, along with other items from Wrest Park, was later sold at an auction.

In the early 1920s, Lady Lucas also made another important donation. She gave a large collection of fossils to the Natural History Museum. Most of these fossils came from the Isle of Wight.

Personal Life and Titles

In 1916, Nan Ino Cooper received her brother's titles. She became the 10th Baroness Lucas and 6th Lady Dingwall. On April 30, 1917, she married Lt-Col Howard Lister Cooper.
