Nancy Ip Yuk-yu is a famous Hong Kong neuroscientist. A neuroscientist is a scientist who studies the brain and nervous system. She is also known as Nancy Y. Ip in her scientific work.
Since October 19, 2022, she has been the 5th President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Before this, she held many important roles at HKUST. These included Vice-President of Research and Development and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience. She also helps represent Hong Kong in a big meeting called the National People's Congress.

About Nancy Ip
Nancy Ip was born in Hong Kong. She is the youngest of six children in her family. She went to secondary school at St. Mary's Canossian College.
Her Education Journey
Nancy Ip studied Chemistry and Biology at Simmons College. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1977. Later, she received her doctorate degree in pharmacology from Harvard University Medical School in 1983. Pharmacology is the study of how medicines affect the body.
After finishing her studies, she worked in the USA for some time. She was a Senior Staff Scientist at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in New York.
Her Career at HKUST
Nancy Ip joined The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1993. She has held many leadership positions there. She was the Dean of Science and the Head of the Department of Biochemistry.
Currently, she is the Vice-President for Research and Development. She is also the Morningside Professor of Life Science. She leads the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at the university.
Important Recognitions
Nancy Ip has been chosen as a member of many important science groups. These include the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2001) and the US National Academy of Sciences (2015). She also became a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in 2015.
In 2004, she received a special award called the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science. She won this award for her discoveries about how the nervous system grows and develops.
Her Research Work
Nancy Ip has made many important discoveries in neuroscience. She studies "neurotrophic factors." These are special proteins that help brain cells, called neurons, grow, survive, and develop.
Her recent work focuses on understanding diseases like Alzheimer's disease. She looks at how certain signals in the brain go wrong. Her research helps scientists find new ways to treat these diseases.
