Nancy Chu Ip Yuk-yu (simplified Chinese: 朱叶玉如; traditional Chinese: 朱葉玉如; pinyin: Yè Yùrú), also known as Nancy Y. Ip, is a famous neuroscientist from Hong Kong. She is currently the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She started this important role on October 19, 2022.

Before becoming President, she was the Vice-President for Research and Development at HKUST. She also held special titles like Morningside Professor of Life Science. Plus, she directed the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at the university. In December 2022, Ms. Ip also became a representative from Hong Kong for the National People's Congress. This is a big meeting in China where important decisions are made.

About Nancy Ip

Her Early Life and Education

Nancy Ip was born in Hong Kong. She is the youngest of six children in her family. She went to secondary school at St. Mary's Canossian College.

She studied Chemistry and Biology at Simmons College, earning her bachelor's degree in 1977. Later, in 1983, she received her doctorate in pharmacology from Harvard University Medical School. After finishing her studies, she worked in the USA for some time. She was a Senior Staff Scientist at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in New York.

Her Work at HKUST

Nancy Ip joined The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1993. Since then, she has held many important positions. She was the Dean of Science and the Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute. She also led the Department of Biochemistry.

Currently, she is the Vice-President for Research and Development. She is also the Morningside Professor of Life Science. She directs the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at the university.

Her Amazing Scientific Work

Nancy Ip has made very important discoveries about neurotrophic factors. These are special proteins that help neurons (brain cells) grow, survive, and develop. Her recent work helps us understand how certain signals in the brain go wrong in Alzheimer's disease. This research has found new ways to target the disease and develop possible treatments.

Awards and Recognition

Nancy Ip has received many honors for her contributions to science. She was chosen to be part of several important science academies. These include the Chinese Academy of Sciences (in 2001) and the US National Academy of Sciences (in 2015).

In 2004, she received the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science. This award recognized her discoveries about how the nervous system grows and forms connections.
