Early Life and Education

Nanette studied how to make films at a famous school called NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. This is where she learned the skills to become a successful director and producer.

Making Documentaries: Early Success

In 1997, Nanette worked with Brett Morgen on her first film, On the Ropes. This documentary followed the lives of three young boxers and their coach. Even though it was made on a small budget, the film became a big hit. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary. It also won a special award at the Sundance Film Festival and a Directors Guild of America award for best directing in a documentary.

In 1998, Nanette helped write the script for a documentary called In the Name of the Emperor. This film, directed by Nancy Tong, told the true story of a terrible event in 1937 where many Chinese people were harmed.

Working with Robert Evans

Nanette teamed up with Brett Morgen again in 2002 for a documentary about Robert Evans, a famous movie producer. The film was called The Kid Stays in the Picture. Critics loved this movie, and it won several awards for Best Documentary.

Television and Other Projects

In 2004, Nanette produced a TV show for IFC called Film School. This show followed four film students at her old school, Tisch. Later, in 2007, she was an executive producer and writer for a VH1 documentary called NY77: The Coolest Year In Hell. This show explored the exciting music and art scene in New York City during 1977, including the rise of hip hop, punk, and disco. She also helped produce another documentary called American Shopper.

Filming American Teen

Her documentary American Teen was nominated for a big award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. For this project, Nanette lived in a small town in Indiana for 10 months. She filmed every day and ended up with over 1,000 hours of video! It took a whole year to edit all that footage into the final movie.

Nanette lives in New York and is a mother to one daughter. She used to co-own a bar in Manhattan called The Half-King with Scott Anderson and Sebastian Junger.
