The Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (which is called Nara Bunkazai Kenkyū-jo (奈良文化財研究所) in Japanese) is often known as the Nara Research Institute for Cultural Properties or simply as Nabunken. It is a special organization that works to protect Japan's important cultural treasures. These treasures include old objects, artworks, and writings.

Nabunken is a type of organization called an Independent Administrative Institution (IAI). This means it is a public group that works on its own, but still helps the government.

What is the Nara Cultural Properties Institute?

The main goal of Nabunken is to find, study, and keep safe Japan's cultural heritage. This heritage includes many things from the past. They work to make sure these valuable items last for a long time. This way, future generations can also learn from and enjoy them.

History of Nabunken

Nabunken was first started in 1972. Since then, it has grown and changed a lot. It has different teams that focus on various parts of its work.

Early Work and Discoveries

Some of Nabunken's early work included digging up and fixing old sites. They worked on important ancient cities like Heijō-kyō and Fujiwara-kyō. These were capital cities of Japan a long time ago. They also studied many old documents from Japan's early history. This helped us learn more about how people lived back then.

Joining Forces with Other Institutes

In 2001, the Nara Institute joined with another important group. This was the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo. They became one bigger organization. This helped them work together even better to protect Japan's heritage.

Later, in 2007, the Research Institutes joined even more groups. They merged with several big museums. These included the Tokyo National Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, the Nara National Museum, and the Kyushu National Museum. This made a very large network dedicated to culture.
