Narrows is a town in Giles County, Virginia, United States. It got its name because the New River flows through a narrow part of the land here.

In 2010, about 2,029 people lived in Narrows. This was a small decrease from the year 2000. The town is part of the larger BlacksburgChristiansburg metropolitan area.

Geography of Narrows

Narrows is located at about 37 degrees North latitude and 80 degrees West longitude.

The town is just north of the Mill Creek (conservation area). This area is part of the Jefferson National Forest. The Wilderness Society calls it a "Mountain Treasure" because of its natural beauty.

The United States Census Bureau says that Narrows covers about 1.3 square miles (3.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, and a small part is water.

History of Narrows

People started settling in the Narrows area as early as 1778. A post office was opened in 1873. The town officially became a town in 1904.

New River Rebels Baseball Team

From 1946 to 1950, Narrows had its own minor league baseball team called the New River Rebels. They also represented the nearby town of Pearisburg, Virginia.

The New River Rebels were part of the Class D Appalachian League. They won the championship in this league two years in a row, in 1946 and 1947. In 1946, the team was connected with the Chicago White Sox, a major league baseball team. They played their games at a place called Ragsdale Field.

Other Historical Events

On December 22, 1996, a plane called Airborne Express Flight 827 crashed in Narrows.

In 2014, the Narrows Commercial Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means the area is important for its history and buildings.
