Natalie E. Hudson was born on January 13, 1957. She is a very important judge in Minnesota. Since October 2023, she has been the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Before that, from 2015 to 2023, she was an Associate Justice on the same court.
Early Life and Education
Natalie Hudson's parents are Florence and Don Hudson. She went to Arizona State University and finished her studies in 1979. After that, she attended the University of Minnesota Law School. While there, she was the main editor of the school newspaper, Quaere. She also worked on the Law Review from 1980 to 1981. She earned her law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1982.
Her Career Journey
After law school, Natalie Hudson worked as a lawyer helping people with housing issues. She was a staff attorney for Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services from 1982 to 1986. Then, she joined a law firm called Robins, Zelle, Larson & Kaplan. There, she worked on general civil cases and employment law.
From 1989 to 1992, Hudson was an assistant dean at Hamline University School of Law. She then served as a city attorney for St. Paul from 1992 to 1994. After that, she worked for the Minnesota Attorney General's Office. She focused on criminal appeals and health licensing.
Becoming a Judge
In 2002, Governor Jesse Ventura chose Natalie Hudson to be a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This was a big step in her career.
On August 18, 2015, Governor Mark Dayton nominated her to join the Minnesota Supreme Court. She took the place of Justice Alan Page, who retired. Natalie Hudson is the second African American woman to serve on this important court.
On August 23, 2023, Governor Tim Walz announced that Natalie Hudson would become the Chief Justice. She took on this role on October 2, 2023. She is the first woman of color and the first African-American person to serve as the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. This is a historic achievement.
