Natalie E. Hudson (born January 13, 1957) is a very important judge in the state of Minnesota. Since 2023, she has been the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. This means she leads the highest court in the state. Before that, from 2015 to 2023, she was an Associate Justice on the same court.
Early Life and Education
Natalie Hudson was born on January 13, 1957. Her parents are Florence and Don Hudson. She went to Arizona State University and finished her studies there in 1979.
After college, she decided to study law. She attended the University of Minnesota Law School. There, she worked on the school's newspaper, Quaere. In 1982, she earned her law degree, which is called a Juris Doctor.
Working as a Lawyer
After law school, Natalie Hudson started her career as a lawyer. From 1982 to 1986, she helped people with housing problems. She worked as a staff attorney for Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services.
Later, she joined a law firm where she worked on different types of legal cases. She also spent time helping students. From 1989 to 1992, she was an assistant dean at Hamline University School of Law.
She then worked for the city of St. Paul as a city attorney from 1992 to 1994. After that, she became an Assistant Attorney General for Minnesota. In this role, she handled criminal appeals and other legal matters for the state.
Becoming a Judge
Natalie Hudson's journey to becoming a judge began in 2002. Governor Jesse Ventura appointed her to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This court reviews decisions made by lower courts.
In 2015, Governor Mark Dayton chose her to join the Minnesota Supreme Court. She took the place of Justice Alan Page. When she joined, she became the second African American woman to serve on this important court.
Then, in 2023, Governor Tim Walz announced an even bigger role for her. He named Natalie Hudson as the new Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. She is the first woman of color and the first African American person to hold this top position in Minnesota's highest court.
