Nathaniel Grey, also known as X-Man, is a superhero from Marvel Comics. He first appeared in X-Man #1 in March 1995. He was created by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Steve Skroce.

X-Man is a special version of another Marvel hero named Cable. Nate comes from a different universe called the "Age of Apocalypse" (Earth-295). In his world, he is the son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey. He was created through genetic experiments by a villain named Mr. Sinister.

Nate Grey's first name comes from Mr. Sinister's real name, Nathaniel Essex. His last name, Grey, comes from his genetic mother, Jean Grey. Unlike Cable, Nate was not infected by a special virus. This allowed him to have incredibly strong telepathic (mind-reading) and telekinetic (moving things with his mind) powers. He was one of the most powerful mutants ever.

The Story of X-Man

The comic series X-Man started as a short story collection. It took the place of the Cable comic during the "Age of Apocalypse" storyline in 1995. After this story ended, Marvel brought Nate Grey to their main comic book universe.

The X-Man series continued until 2001. During this time, Nate had to learn how to live in a strange new world. He was also one of the most powerful people there. The series ended with him seemingly giving his life to save others.

X-Man's Powers

Nate Grey has many amazing powers. These powers come from his strong psychic abilities. He can use his mind to do many things.

  • Telekinesis: He can move objects with his mind. He can also create force fields.
  • Telepathy: He can read minds and communicate with others using only his thoughts.
  • Energy Manipulation: Nate can control and create energy. He can even change matter.
  • Teleportation: He can move himself and others instantly from one place to another.
  • Precognition: He can see into the future.
  • Retrocognition: He can see events from the past.
  • Astral Projection: He can send his spirit out of his body.
  • Intangibility: He can make himself able to pass through solid objects.
  • Cross-dimensional Travel: He can travel to different universes.

Being an X-Man

Even though his name is X-Man, Nate was only a member of the X-Men for a short time. This was true both in his original "Age of Apocalypse" world and in the main Marvel universe.

At first, people only called him by his real name, Nate Grey. Later, he started to be called X-Man. The comics never fully explained why he got this code name.
