Nate's Early Baseball Days
Nate Snell started his baseball journey when the Baltimore Orioles signed him in September 1976. He was an "amateur free agent," meaning he wasn't drafted but was signed directly by a team. His first professional season was in 1977 with the Class A-Advanced Miami Orioles.
Nate spent about seven years playing in the minor leagues. These are leagues where players develop their skills before reaching the major leagues.
Making It to the Major Leagues
Nate Snell finally got called up to the Major Leagues on September 20, 1984. He joined the Baltimore Orioles. In his first season, he pitched nearly eight innings. He only allowed two "earned runs," which means runs that were scored because of his pitching, not errors by his teammates. He also got seven strikeouts.
For the 1985 and 1986 seasons, Nate was a regular pitcher in the Orioles' bullpen. The bullpen is where relief pitchers wait to enter the game. In 1985, he had a great "Earned Run Average" (ERA) of 2.69 over 100 innings. ERA measures how many earned runs a pitcher gives up per nine innings. A lower ERA is better. In 1986, his ERA was 3.86 over 72 innings.
Playing for the Detroit Tigers
After the 1986 season, Nate Snell signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent. He pitched 38 innings for them in 1987. His ERA was 3.86, and he had a record of one win and two losses.
After his time with the Tigers, Nate played a few more seasons in the minor leagues. He played for teams in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He officially retired from baseball after the 1990 season.
Nate's Career Stats
Nate Snell finished his Major League Baseball career with a record of 7 wins and 6 losses. His overall ERA was 3.29. He also recorded 5 saves, which means he finished games where his team was winning by a small margin. He had a total of 96 strikeouts. His "Walks plus hits per inning pitched" (WHIP) was 1.31. WHIP measures how many batters reach base per inning against a pitcher. A lower WHIP is better.
