His Legacy

These included his handwritten notes, his large library of books, and his amazing collection of dried plants. This plant collection, called a herbarium, had about 12,000 different plant types!

Most of his collections went to the Natural History Society of Northumberland and Durham. Many items are now kept at the Hancock Museum. To honor his work, a famous botanist named De Candolle even named a group of plants Winchia after him!
