The Nathaniel Treat House is a special old home located at 114 Main Street in Orono, Maine. It was likely built in the 1830s. This house is a great example of a building style that mixes two older styles: Federal and Greek Revival.

The house was built for Nathaniel Treat. He was an important businessman in the area. Later, in the 1900s, the house became the home of Charles J. Dunn. He was a very important judge, serving as the chief justice of Maine's highest court. Because of its history and unique design, the Nathaniel Treat House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States.

About the Nathaniel Treat House

The Nathaniel Treat House is on the east side of Main Street. This street is also known as United States Route 2. The house is a two-and-a-half story building made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side-gable roof. There are four chimneys placed evenly on the ends of the house.

The front of the house has five windows and a door, all lined up nicely. The main entrance is in the middle. It has a porch supported by fancy columns. The front door is set back a little. It has tall, narrow windows on each side and a rounded window above it. All the windows are a type called sash windows. They have stone sills and tops. A decorative border runs around the building below the roof. There is also a one-story open porch on the south side of the house.

History of the House and Its Owners

Nathaniel Treat was a very important person in the Orono and Old Town area. He was a leading businessman in the mid-1800s. He moved to Orono in 1829. He started several sawmills, which were factories for cutting wood. He also bought a lot of land that is now part of Orono and Old Town.

Nathaniel Treat was one of the first town leaders in Orono. He also served in the state government. This house was probably built soon after he arrived in Orono. It was his home for about 30 years.

In 1924, a woman named Irene Dunn bought the house. She was the wife of Charles J. Dunn. At that time, Charles Dunn was a judge on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. This is the highest court in Maine. Judge Dunn served on this court from 1918 to 1939. For the last four years, he was the chief justice, meaning he was the head judge of the court.
