Nation of Yahweh facts for kids
The Nation of Yahweh is a religious group that started in 1979 in Miami. It was founded by Hulon Mitchell Jr., who was known as Yahweh ben Yahweh. The name Yahweh ben Yahweh means "God, son of God."
This group is mainly made up of Black Hebrew Israelites. They believe that African Americans are the original Israelites from the Bible. A main goal of the group is for African Americans to move to Israel. The Nation of Yahweh sees Yahweh ben Yahweh as the Son of God. This belief makes them different from other Black Hebrew Israelite groups.
The founder, Hulon Mitchell, faced serious legal challenges during his leadership. Some organizations, like the Southern Poverty Law Center, describe the group as a "cult" or a group with unusual beliefs.
The Nation of Yahweh describes itself as a movement that grew very quickly. They state that Yahweh ben Yahweh helped the group gain many followers and supporters in over 1,300 cities in the U.S. and 16 other countries.
What the Nation of Yahweh Does Today
Even though their leader, Yahweh ben Yahweh, faced legal issues and passed away in 2007, the Nation of Yahweh is still active. They continue to believe that Yahweh ben Yahweh was a special spiritual leader.
The group's website says they have changed some of their past ideas, especially about race. An attorney who is part of the group, Wendelyn Rush, says that any disagreements they have with the U.S. government are now peaceful and involve only words. The group is no longer focused in just one place like Miami. Instead, its members are spread out across the United States. They claim that their newer writings have removed or changed past ideas that were seen as racist or about their leader's past legal actions.
The Nation of Yahweh also buys time on TV for infomercials. They show a weekly program on TV stations across the U.S. This show usually airs on weekends in the early morning. It combines Bible studies with talks about the Nation of Yahweh.
In 2012, the group was mentioned in the news again. This happened when a former member named Maurice Woodside, also known as "Michael the Black Man", spoke at a political event. He has since become a supporter of Donald Trump and continues to defend the beliefs of Yahweh ben Yahweh and the Nation.
