The National Anthem of the Republic of China is the official song of Taiwan, which is also known as the Republic of China. It is sometimes called Sān Mín Zhǔyì (meaning 'The Three Principles of the People'). This anthem began as a speech given by Sun Yat-sen in 1924. A few years later, Cheng Maoyun wrote music for the speech.

The song was first adopted by the Kuomintang political party. It became the official anthem for the Republic of China in 1937 and was fully recognized in 1943. After Japan surrendered in World War II, this song became very important on the island of Taiwan. In 1949, when a different political group took control of mainland China, the government moved to Taiwan. Because of this, the anthem was banned on the mainland but is still used in Taiwan today. Taiwan also has another song, the National Flag Anthem of the Republic of China, which is used alongside the national anthem.

Understanding the Anthem's Lyrics

The lyrics of the anthem are based on the ideas of Sun Yat-sen. These ideas are known as the "Three Principles of the People." They are about nationalism, democracy, and the well-being of the people. The song encourages people to work hard and be loyal to these principles.

Original Chinese Lyrics (Traditional)

Here are the lyrics in Traditional Chinese:

三民主義,吾黨所宗,
以建民國,以進大同。
咨爾多士,為民前鋒;
夙夜匪懈,主義是從。
矢勤矢勇,必信必忠;
一心一德,貫徹始終。

Pinyin Version

This is how the lyrics are written using the Pinyin system, which helps people read Chinese words using the English alphabet:

Sānmín Zhǔyì, wúdǎng suǒ zōng;
Yǐ jiàn Mínguó, yǐ jìn dà tóng.
Zī'ěr duō shì, wéi mín qiánfēng;
Sù yè fěi xiè, zhǔyì shì cóng.
Shǐ qín shǐ yǒng, bì xìn bì zhōng;
Yì xīn yì dé, guànchè shǐzhōng.

English Translation of the Anthem

This is the official English translation of the anthem's lyrics:

San Min Chu-i,
Our aim shall be:
To found a free land,
World peace, be our stand.
Lead on, comrades,
Vanguards ye are.
Hold fast your aim,
By sun and star.
Be earnest and brave,
Your country to save,
One heart, one soul,
One mind, one goal...
