The National Assembly (in Portuguese: Assembleia Nacional) is like the main law-making group for the country of São Tomé and Príncipe. It's a special kind of parliament where all the members work together in one main group.
Members of the Assembly are chosen by the people every four years. The country's President can sometimes end the Assembly's term early if there's a big problem. But they need permission from a special group called the Council of State. This Council has 12 members who give advice.

How the Assembly Started
The National Assembly was created in 1975. This happened when the country adopted its first Constitution. From 1975 to 1990, the Assembly mostly just agreed with the one ruling political party, the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe.
Then, in 1990, the country changed to a system where many different political parties could compete. This was thanks to new constitutional reforms. The first fair elections were held in 1991.
Recent Elections and Members
The most recent election for the National Assembly happened on September 25, 2022. In this election, people voted for the 55 members who would represent them.
The Assembly has 55 members in total. These members are chosen through a system called Party-list proportional representation. This means that political parties get a number of seats in the Assembly based on how many votes they receive.
