The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) is an organization that helps people discover and enjoy early music. Early music means music from a long time ago. This usually includes music written before the 17th century. The NCEM is located in York, England. It is based in a very old church called St Margaret, Walmgate. This church is a Grade I listed building. This means it is very important historically. Every year, the NCEM organizes the exciting York Early Music Festival.

About the Centre

The National Centre for Early Music was designed by van Heyningen and Haward Architects. It first opened its doors in April 2000. The NCEM was built with help from a grant from the National Lottery. Other groups like English Heritage also provided money.

What You Can Find There

The centre has a special space for performances. This space is inside the old church building. It also has rooms for meetings, events, and recording music. You can even rent historic keyboard instruments from the centre.

The church building was empty for some years before. It was updated to be perfect for many types of performances. It can also be used for teaching, conferences, and exhibitions. The roof was rebuilt to make the sound better. There are also special panels to change how the sound travels in the room.

York Early Music Festival

The annual York Early Music Festival is a big event. It is organized from the NCEM building. The festival is managed by the York Early Music Foundation. This foundation is a charity registered in the UK.

Learning and New Music

During the rest of the year, the Foundation runs educational programs. These programs are based at the National Centre. Events include learning sessions, workshops, and special master classes. These classes are taught by expert musicians.

The NCEM also supports new music. There is an annual Young Composers Award. This award encourages young composers to create new music. They work with groups that play early music.
