The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) is a special place in York, England. It helps people learn about and enjoy early music. Early music is music from a long time ago, like the medieval or Baroque periods. The NCEM is located inside an old church called St Margaret, Walmgate. This church is very old and beautiful. Every year, the NCEM also puts on the York Early Music Festival.

What is the National Centre for Early Music?

The National Centre for Early Music was opened in April 2000. It was designed by architects named van Heyningen and Haward. The centre was built with help from the National Lottery. Other groups like English Heritage also helped.

What can you do at the NCEM?

The NCEM has a main space for performances. This is inside the old church building. It also has rooms for meetings and other events. You can even record music there. The centre has old keyboard instruments that groups can rent.

How the old church was changed

The church building was empty for some years before the NCEM moved in. It was updated to be good for many types of performances. It can also be used for teaching, meetings, and art shows. The roof was rebuilt to make the sound better. There are also special panels called baffles. These can change how the sound travels in the room.

The York Early Music Festival

The yearly York Early Music Festival is planned from the NCEM. This festival is run by the York Early Music Foundation. This foundation is a charity in the UK.

Learning and new music

Throughout the rest of the year, the Foundation runs many educational programs. These programs are held at the National Centre. They include workshops and special classes called master classes. The NCEM also supports new music. For example, there is an award for young composers. This award encourages them to create new music with early music groups.
