St Margaret's Church is a very old building in York, England. It is located on Walmgate street. This historic building was once a parish church for the Church of England. Today, it is a special place for music and performances.

St Margaret's Church is considered a Grade I listed building. This means it is a very important historical site. It has special protection to make sure it lasts for many more years.

The Story of St Margaret's

This church has a long and interesting past. Parts of the building, like the south porch, are from the 12th century. That means they are over 800 years old! The main part of the church, called the nave, was built in the 14th century. The vestry, a room used by clergy, was added in the 15th century.

Later, in the late 1600s, the church's tower was rebuilt. This shows how the building changed over hundreds of years.

In the mid-1800s, the church got a big makeover. A person named Thomas Pickersgill led this work. The north wall was moved to make the church wider. They also put in a new floor and new seating. The roof over the nave was replaced too.

The church stopped being used for regular services in 1974. For a while, the York Theatre Royal used it for storage. But in 2000, it got a new life! It became a home for the National Centre for Early Music. Now, it is a popular place for concerts and other events.

The Church Organ

For many years, St Margaret's Church had a beautiful pipe organ. This organ was built in 1855 by a company called Ward. You could find details about it on the National Pipe Organ Register. However, this organ is no longer inside the church today.
