The National Noh Theatre (called Kokuritsu Nōgaku Dō in Japanese) is a special place in Tokyo, Japan. It opened in September 1983. This theatre is dedicated to traditional Japanese performing arts.
What You Can See There
The main part of the theatre is an auditorium that can seat 591 people. Here, you can watch performances of Noh and Kyōgen. These are very old types of Japanese theatre.
More Than Just a Stage
Besides the main stage, the National Noh Theatre has other important areas:
- A rehearsal stage where performers practice.
- An exhibition area where you can learn more about Noh and Kyōgen.
- A lecture room for classes and talks.
- A reference library with books and materials about these arts.
Supporting Performers
Since 2007, the theatre has made an effort to feature female performers. They now regularly present shows starring women in Noh and Kyōgen. This helps to celebrate all artists in these traditional forms.
