The National Union of Teachers (NUT) was a very important group for teachers in the United Kingdom. It was the biggest union for teachers, working to make sure teachers had good working conditions and that education was the best it could be. The NUT also campaigned on important issues related to schools and learning.

What is a Teachers' Union?

A teachers' union is like a team or a club for teachers. Imagine if all the teachers in your school wanted to ask for something important, like better supplies for classrooms or fairer pay. It would be hard for just one teacher to do it. A union helps many teachers work together. They join forces to speak with one voice to school leaders or the government.

Why Teachers Formed the NUT

Teachers formed the NUT to help each other. They wanted to make sure they were treated fairly. They also wanted to improve schools for students. The union worked on two main things:

  • Working Conditions: This means making sure teachers have good places to work. It includes things like fair pay, reasonable working hours, and safe school buildings.
  • Educational Issues: This means helping to make education better for everyone. The NUT would share ideas on how to teach well. They also spoke up about what schools needed, like enough books or smaller class sizes.

History of the NUT

The National Union of Teachers was established in 1870. This means it was around for a very long time, helping teachers for over 140 years! It grew to be the largest union for teachers in the UK.

Where the NUT Worked

The NUT helped teachers in many parts of the United Kingdom. This included England, Wales, Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man. It worked to improve education across these different areas.

The NUT's Headquarters

The main office for the NUT was called Hamilton House. It was located in London. This building was where many important decisions were made and where the union's staff worked.

Joining Forces: The NEU

In 2017, the National Union of Teachers decided to join with another big teachers' union. It merged with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL). Together, they formed a new, even bigger union called the National Education Union (NEU). This merger made the NEU the largest education union in Europe. It continues the work of helping teachers and improving education.
