Meet Native Deen: Music and Message
The word "Deen" in Arabic means "religion" or "way of life." Native Deen is made up of three young Muslim men: Joshua Salaam, Naeem Muhammad, and Abdul-Malik Ahmad. They grew up in Washington, D.C.
Their music aims to inspire young people. They want to help kids keep their Islamic faith strong. This is especially important when facing daily challenges and temptations. The group members are proud Muslims. They often wear traditional Islamic clothes like kufis and shalwar kameez. They believe there are many ways to show you are a Muslim, both through actions and clothing. Their music is a great example of "positive hip-hop." This means it shares good messages and uplifting themes.
Helping Others: Charitable Work
Native Deen also uses their platform to help people. At an event called "Evening of Inspiration," Naeem Muhammad showed pictures of children in need. These were hungry kids from all over the world. He explained that Islam teaches Muslims to help those who are less fortunate.
He said that Islamic Relief, a charity, "helps the most vulnerable people." He added, "People don't understand how much a dollar can do." He stressed that the event was more than just a concert. It was a "call to action" for everyone to help others.
Where Native Deen Performs
Native Deen performs at many different events. They often play at Islamic conferences and fundraisers. They also perform during holidays like Ramadan and Eid-ul-Adha. The group is quite popular among Muslim youth in North America. They have even toured and performed in other countries around the world.
Their music usually features drums, electronic instruments, and vocals. They do not use wind, string, or metal instruments. This is because many Islamic scholars believe these instruments are not allowed in their music.
How Native Deen Started
The members of Native Deen first met through a group called Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA). Each of them appeared on an album called MYNA RAPS. This album was made to show off new Muslim songwriters and artists.
Salaam, Ahmad, and Muhammad were all performing music by themselves. They decided to join forces and create the group Native Deen.
