The Naukan Yupik language (also called Naukan Siberian Yupik language) is a special language. Its own speakers call it Nuvuqaghmiistun. It is spoken by the Naukan people who live on the Chukchi Peninsula in Russia.

Sadly, Naukan Yupik is a critically endangered language. This means very few people still speak it. In 2010, only about 60 people spoke Naukan Yupik. That's only 13% of the Naukan people!

Naukan Yupik is part of the Eskaleut languages family. It is one of four main Yupik languages. The others are Central Siberian Yupik language, Central Alaskan Yupʼik, and Pacific Gulf Yupik. Naukan Yupik shares features with both Central Siberian Yupik and Central Alaskan Yup'ik.

How Naukan Yupik Works

Every language has rules for how words are built and how they change. This is called morphology. Naukan Yupik, like many languages, changes the ends of words to show their role in a sentence. For example, it uses different endings to show where something is, where it's going, or how it's used.
