Nautilus Island is a private island located in Penobscot Bay, Maine, United States. It is part of the town of Brooksville in Hancock County. This small island has a very interesting past, especially from the time of the American Revolutionary War.

Island History

Nautilus Island is located about half a mile south of Castine. It sits at the entrance to Castine Harbor. This makes it an important spot, and it has a long, exciting history.

Revolutionary War Battle

During the American Revolutionary War, a naval battle happened near the island. An American ship named Hazard fought against a British warship called Nautilus. The island got its name from this British ship.

On July 26, 1779, American forces captured the island. This was part of a bigger plan called the Penobscot Expedition. Paul Revere, a famous American patriot, led some of the Continental Marines who took part in this action.

Island Features

Nautilus Island is about 38 acres in size. That's roughly the size of 29 football fields! The island has old buildings that are over a hundred years old. It also has tennis courts.
