Understanding Airport Codes
Every airport has special codes to identify it. NOLF San Nicolas Island uses a few different ones:
ICAO Code
The ICAO gives a four-letter code to airports around the world. For NOLF San Nicolas Island, this code is KNSI. These codes help air traffic controllers and pilots know exactly which airport they are talking about.
FAA and IATA Codes
The FAA is in charge of air travel in the United States. They give a three-letter code to airports, and for NOLF San Nicolas Island, it's NSI.
There's also the IATA code, which is often used for passenger flights. However, the IATA code NSI is used by a different airport: Nsimalen International Airport in Yaoundé, Cameroon. This means NOLF San Nicolas Island doesn't have a unique IATA code for itself.
A Bit of History
The land where NOLF San Nicolas Island is now was first used for aviation in the 1930s.
Early Airstrips
In the 1930s, the Civil Aeronautics Authority built two simple dirt landing strips on the island. These were meant to be used for emergencies.
In January 1933, the US Navy took control of these landing strips. Since then, they have developed the site into the important military airport it is today. It helps the Navy with training and operations for its planes.
