Navy Town was specifically on the southeast coast of Attu Island. It sat right on the western side of a bay called Massacre Bay.

Navy Town became important during World War II. The United States military used Attu Island as a base. This was because of its location in the Pacific Ocean. The name "Navy Town" came from the military's presence there. It was a busy spot during the war years.

What Happened to Navy Town?

After World War II, the military continued to use Attu Island. There was a Coast Guard station there called Attu Station. This station helped with navigation and weather monitoring. However, in 2010, Attu Station was closed down. This is called "decommissioned." When the station closed, everyone left Navy Town. Since then, Attu Island and Navy Town have had no permanent residents. It is now a ghost town.
