The Nazko River is a river in British Columbia, Canada. It is a branch of the West Road River. The West Road River then flows into the larger Fraser River. The Nazko River flows through a flat, high area called the Fraser Plateau. This area is west of the town of Quesnel.

The name "Nazko" comes from the word Ndazkoh. This word is from the Dakelh (Carrier) language. Ndaz means "from the south" and koh means "river". So, Nazko means "river flowing from the south".

River's Journey

The Nazko River starts in a wet, marshy area on the Fraser Plateau. This area has many small lakes. The river begins around 52°20′N 123°30′W / 52.333°N 123.500°W / 52.333; -123.500. It mostly flows north.

  • Starting Point: The river begins in a boggy area with many lakes.
  • Joining Creeks: Ross Creek joins the Nazko River early on.
  • Through the Lakes: The river then flows through a series of lakes. These include Nazko Lake, Tanilkul Lake, Nastachi Lake, Tzazati Lake, and Tchusiniltil Lake.
  • Park Area: The river also goes through Nazko Lake Provincial Park.
  • More Creeks: Goering Creek joins from the east. Anoko Creek joins from the west.
  • Change in Direction: The Nazko River turns east for a bit. Brown Creek joins from the north.
  • Nazko Falls: The river then drops over Nazko Falls.
  • Returning North: Tautri Creek joins just before the river turns north again.
  • More Tributaries: As it flows north, Wentworth Creek joins from the east. The Clisbako River joins from the southwest.
  • Near Communities: The Nazko River flows past Marmot Lake and Stump Lake. It then enters the Nazko First Nation's land and the community of Nazko.

North of the town of Nazko, Redwater Creek joins from the west. Then the Snaking River joins from the southeast. Soon after, the Nazko River meets the West Road River.

River's Past

The Nazko River is in the traditional lands of the Dakelh people. Specifically, the Chuntezni’i, Euchinico, and Lhoosk'uzt'en bands lived here. Today, the Nazko First Nation has special land areas called Indian Reserves. These reserves are around the community of Nazko, British Columbia.
