Necdet Calp's Early Life and Education
Necdet Calp was born in a town called Karamürsel in Kocaeli Province, Turkey. This was on September 7, 1922. He went to Ankara University and graduated in 1944. He studied political science there. He also continued his studies at the famous London School of Economics in England.
After his education, Necdet Calp became a civil servant. This means he worked for the government. He held many important jobs. He was a district governor and an inspector in the Ministry of Interior. He also served as the governor of two provinces: Siirt and İzmir.
He even worked closely with the Prime Minister of Turkey, İsmet İnönü, as his executive assistant. Later, during a time when the military was in charge (between 1980 and 1983), he was a top official for Prime Minister Bülent Ulusu.
Becoming a Political Leader
On May 21, 1983, Necdet Calp helped start a new political group. It was called the People's Party (HP). This happened after another big party, the Republican People's Party, was closed down. Necdet Calp was chosen to lead this new party.
At first, not many people knew who Necdet Calp was. But he became very popular after a TV discussion. He strongly spoke against selling the Bosphorus Bridge to private companies. This made many people excited about him and his party.
In the national election held on November 6, 1983, his party did very well. The People's Party received 30.5% of all the votes. This made Necdet Calp a member of parliament from Ankara Province. He also became the leader of the opposition. This means his party was the second largest, and he led the group that challenged the government.
Changes in Party Leadership
In the local elections on March 21, 1984, the People's Party did not do as well. They only got 8.8% of the votes. This was a big drop from their previous success. After seeing these results, Necdet Calp decided to resign from his leadership role.
However, he was soon re-elected as the party chairman. But during this time, some members of the party wanted new leadership. At a big meeting of the party on June 29, 1985, Necdet Calp lost his position. Aydın Güven Gürkan became the new leader of the People's Party.
Later Years and Passing
After 1985, Necdet Calp decided to step away from politics. He did not run for parliament in the 1987 elections. He passed away in Ankara on September 13, 1998. He died from a heart attack.
