Nechirvan Idris Barzani (born 21 September 1966) is an important Kurdish politician from Iraq. He is currently the second President of the Kurdistan Region. He was chosen for this role by the Kurdistan Region Parliament in June 2019.
Before becoming President, Nechirvan Barzani was the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government two times. He served from March 2007 to August 2009, and again from March 2012 to May 2019. He has also been the Vice President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party since 2010. He also started the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr, a top university in the region.

Early Life and Family
Nechirvan Barzani was born in 1966 in Barzan, which is in the Kurdistan Region. His first name, Nêçîrvan, means hunter. His family name, Barzani, comes from his birthplace. He is the grandson of Mustafa Barzani, who founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
Education and Personal Details
Nechirvan Barzani studied politics and international relations. He attended the University of Tehran in Iran. In 2008, he received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. This was from Washington and Jefferson College in the United States.
He can speak several languages fluently. These include Kurdish, Persian, and English. He is married to Nabila Barzani. They have five children together: Idris, Cheyavan, Danyal, Ranya, and Maya.
Political Journey
Nechirvan Barzani began his political career early. He was first elected to the KDP central committee in 1989. He was re-elected in 1993 and joined the political bureau. After the 1991 Gulf War, he helped with talks with the Iraqi government. In 1996, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region.
First Term as Prime Minister (2006–2009)
In March 2006, Nechirvan Barzani led the fifth cabinet. This was the first unified government of the Kurdistan Region. Many people who supported him believed he helped the Kurdistan Region grow a lot. During this time, his government was even called "The Development Cabinet." This was because of his work in improving the region.
Second Term as Prime Minister (2012–2019)
Nechirvan Barzani was elected as Prime Minister again in 2012.
In 2014, the Kurdistan Region faced big challenges. The war against the Islamic State (ISIS) began. The region not only had to defend itself but also welcomed nearly two million people. These people were displaced and sought safety in Kurdistan. At the same time, oil prices dropped, and Iraq did not send the region's share of the budget. This led to a major economic crisis. Barzani worked hard using diplomacy to improve relations with Baghdad. This helped to get the budget payments restarted.
Nechirvan Barzani also founded the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH). He was the Chancellor of this university from 2010 to 2019.
President of the Kurdistan Region (2019–Present)
On May 28, 2019, Nechirvan Barzani was elected as the President of Kurdistan Region. He received 68 votes out of 81 Members of Parliament. He officially became President in June 2019. In his speech, he promised to make Kurdistan's democratic values stronger. He also said he would improve the government's policies in many areas. These areas include politics, society, economy, education, healthcare, and industry.
He is known for supporting the rights of all ethnic and religious groups. He also encourages talks between different faiths and supports women's rights. Because of this, he has received support from various groups in the Kurdistan Region.
As President, Nechirvan Barzani has continued to work on building strong relationships with neighboring countries. He also aims to strengthen ties with countries around the world. He works closely with the federal government in Baghdad. Their goal is to find solutions together, following the Constitution of Iraq.
President Barzani has also publicly committed to helping Yezidis who are still missing. These individuals were affected by the ISIS attacks. In 2014, Barzani set up a special office. This office helps rescue Yezidi survivors who were held captive by ISIS. More than 3,340 Yezidi victims have been freed with the help of this office.
