Nechirvan Idris Barzani (born September 21, 1966) is an important Kurdish politician from Iraq. He is currently the second President of the Kurdistan Region. He was chosen for this role by the Kurdistan Region Parliament in June 2019.
Before becoming president, Nechirvan Barzani was the Vice President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party since 2010. He also served as the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government twice. He was Prime Minister from March 2007 to August 2009, and again from March 2012 to May 2019. He also started the University Of Kurdistan Hewlêr, a top university in the region.

Early Life and Family History
Nechirvan Barzani was born in 1966 in Barzan, a place in the Kurdistan Region. His first name, Nêçîrvan, means hunter. His family name, Barzani, comes from his birthplace.
He is the grandson of Mustafa Barzani, a famous Kurdish leader. Mustafa Barzani led the Kurdish Revolution and fought for Kurdish rights. He also founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
Nechirvan Barzani's father, Idris Mustafa Barzani, was also a key KDP leader. He worked hard for the rights and freedom of the Kurdish people. He fought alongside his father and his brother, Masoud Barzani, who became the first president of the Kurdistan Region.
In 1975, Nechirvan Barzani's family had to leave their home. They went to Iran for safety. This happened because the Iraqi government at the time was very harsh towards the Kurds. Many Kurds were forced to leave their homes or were harmed.
Following his family's path, Nechirvan Barzani became active in Kurdish politics. He often went with his father on trips to other countries. They worked to gain support for the Kurdish cause. He wanted to bring peace, stability, and fairness to the Kurdish people.
Education and Personal Life
Nechirvan Barzani studied politics and international relations. He attended the University of Tehran in Iran. In 2008, he received an honorary degree from Washington and Jefferson College in the United States.
He can speak Kurdish, Persian, and English very well. He enjoys reading Kurdish and Persian poems and stories. He is married to Nabila Barzani. They have five children: Idris, Cheyavan, Danyal, Ranya, and Maya.
Political Journey
Nechirvan Barzani was first chosen for the KDP central committee in 1989. He was re-elected in 1993 and joined the political bureau. After the 1991 Gulf War, he helped talk with the Iraqi government.
In 1996, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). This government was formed after elections in 1992. In 1999, Nechirvan Barzani became the Prime Minister of the KRG. He helped bring together the main Kurdish parties in 2005 to form a single KRG.
Prime Minister: First Term (2006–2009)
In March 2006, Nechirvan Barzani led the first unified government of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Many people who supported him believed he helped the Kurdistan Region grow a lot. They even called his government "The Development Cabinet." This was because of his work in improving the region. From 2009 to 2012, another politician, Barham Salih, served as Prime Minister.
Prime Minister: Second Term (2012–2019)
Nechirvan Barzani was chosen as Prime Minister again in 2012. His main goals were to make life better for people in the Kurdistan Region. He also worked to make the region more peaceful and secure. He focused on building relationships with other countries and bringing in foreign investments.
During his time, he worked to protect the rights of women and different ethnic and religious groups. The Kurdistan Region saw many improvements in electricity, water, housing, and roads. More than thirty countries opened offices in the Kurdistan Region during his leadership.
In 2014, the war against the Islamic State affected the Kurdistan Region. Besides fighting, the region also welcomed almost two million people who had to leave their homes. The region also faced money problems because oil prices dropped and Iraq did not send enough funds. Barzani used diplomacy to fix relations with Baghdad and get the budget funds back.
After the 2017 Kurdistan independence vote, the Iraqi government took strong actions against the Kurdistan Region. Barzani worked hard to make relations with Baghdad normal again. He also worked to strengthen ties with countries around the world.
Nechirvan Barzani also founded the University Of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH). This is the highest-ranked university in the region. He was the head of the university from 2010 to 2019.
President of the Kurdistan Region (2019–Present)
On May 28, 2019, Nechirvan Barzani was elected as the President of Kurdistan Region. He was chosen by 68 out of 81 members of parliament. He officially became President in June 2019, taking over from his uncle.
In his speech, he said that democracy is a great achievement for the Kurdistan Region. He promised to keep making Kurdistan's democratic values stronger. He also promised to improve the government's plans for society, economy, education, healthcare, and industry.
He is known for supporting the rights of all ethnic and religious groups. He also encourages talks between different faiths and supports women's rights. Because of this, many different groups in the Kurdistan Region supported him. They believe his presidency will ensure fair and equal treatment for everyone. His election showed that the Kurdistan Region Parliament wanted him to continue this work. This has made Kurdistan an example for other nations in the Middle East.
President Barzani also said he would continue to build strong relationships with neighboring countries. He wants to strengthen ties with the world and work closely with the Iraqi government. They aim to find solutions together within the rules of the Constitution of Iraq.
As President, Nechirvan Barzani is still working on his mission to rescue Yezidi people. In 2014, he set up a special office to help Yezidi survivors held by ISIS terrorists. More than 3,340 Yezidi victims have been freed with help from this office.
