The Nectar Covered Bridge was a special wooden bridge that crossed the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River in Blount County, Alabama, United States. It was located near the town of Nectar. This bridge was once one of the longest covered bridges in the entire country! It was open for cars to drive across until it was sadly destroyed by fire in 1993.

About the Nectar Covered Bridge

Bridge History

The Nectar Covered Bridge was built in 1934. It was 385 feet (117 meters) long. The bridge used a special design called a Town Lattice truss. This design uses a crisscross pattern of wooden beams. A team led by foreman Zelma C. Tidwell built the bridge.

The Nectar Covered Bridge was very important. It was the third-longest covered bridge built in Blount County. At one point, it was even the seventh-longest covered bridge in the entire United States!

What Happened to the Bridge?

The bridge was open for single-lane traffic for many years. Sadly, on June 13, 1993, the bridge was burned down by vandals. Vandals are people who intentionally damage property. The Blount County Commission and the Alabama Department of Transportation used to take care of the bridge.

A Special Place for the Community

The Nectar Covered Bridge was more than just a way to cross the river. It was a popular meeting spot for the community. People would gather there for different events. It was also a place where large baptism ceremonies took place.

The Nectar Covered Bridge was recognized for its history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 20, 1981. This list includes important historical places in the United States.

Today, a new concrete bridge stands where the old covered bridge once was. However, you can still see the original stone piers. These are the strong stone supports that held up the old bridge. They stand across the river south of the current crossing.

Two stone piers remain where the Nectar Covered Bridge once stood. The bridge burned down in 1993.
