What is a Tugboat?

The Ned Hanlan was built in 1932. It was designed by a smart boat engineer named John Stephen. The boat was built right in Toronto, in an area called the Portlands.

A tugboat's main job is to help other, bigger boats. The Ned Hanlan would pull large lake ships. It also helped with building projects in the harbour. Sometimes, it even acted as a backup ferry. This meant it would carry people between the Toronto Islands airport and the mainland.

Becoming a Museum Ship

The Ned Hanlan stopped working in 1967. It stayed in Toronto Harbour for a few years. Then, in 1971, it was moved to a special spot. It was put on display next to the Toronto Maritime Museum. This museum was located at Exhibition Place.

In June 2012, the tugboat moved again. Its new home is on Hanlan's Point, which is part of the Toronto Islands. The Ned Hanlan is still in pretty good shape today. It doesn't have much rust. There is a small dent on one side near the steering room. The propeller and rudder, which help steer the boat, have been taken off.
