Nederlek (which means "Lower Lek") was a special kind of local government area called a municipality in the western part of the Netherlands. It was located in the province of South Holland.

Nederlek was not a single town. Instead, it was made up of two main population centers: Krimpen aan de Lek and Lekkerkerk. The name "Lower Lek" comes from its position along the Lek River.

What Was Nederlek?

Nederlek was a municipality, which is like a local government area. It managed services for the people living there. This included things like roads, parks, and local rules.

How Nederlek Was Formed

Nederlek was created on January 1, 1985. It was formed when two smaller municipalities, Krimpen aan de Lek and Lekkerkerk, joined together. This joining of areas is called an amalgamation.

Where Was Nederlek Located?

The former municipality of Nederlek was located in the Netherlands. It was part of the South Holland province. The area covered about 31.75 square kilometers. A small part of this area, about 4.14 square kilometers, was covered by water.

Changes Over Time

Nederlek existed as a separate municipality for many years. However, things changed in 2015.

Joining Krimpenerwaard

Since January 1, 2015, Nederlek is no longer a separate municipality. It became a part of a larger municipality called Krimpenerwaard. This means that the towns of Krimpen aan de Lek and Lekkerkerk are now part of Krimpenerwaard.

A Past Challenge in Lekkerkerk

One of the towns in Nederlek, Lekkerkerk, faced a big challenge in 1980. An environmental issue was discovered under a neighborhood. This problem was successfully cleaned up. The cleanup cost a lot of money, about 188 million Dutch guilders. This was around 90 million US dollars at the time.
