Needmore is a small place in Bailey County, Texas, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a settlement that is not part of an official city or town government.
History of Needmore
Needmore got its interesting name for a couple of reasons. Some people say the people who started the town "needed more" settlers to come live there. Others believe the name showed how much the town needed help from bigger, richer cities nearby. They hoped to get attention and support to help their new community grow.
The town was founded in the 1920s. However, it never grew very big. By 1940, only 20 people lived there, and it had just two stores. The population did increase to 98 by 1980 and stayed that way until 1990. But by the year 2000, the number of residents dropped to 45.
Geography and Nature
Needmore is located a bit east of the middle of Bailey County. It is about 13 miles (21 km) south of Muleshoe, which is the main town in the county. It's also about 6 miles (10 km) north of the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge.
You can find Needmore where Texas State Highway 214 and Farm to Market Road 298 meet. Nearby small communities include Baileyboro to the west and Circle Back, which is about 4 miles (6 km) to the east.
The land around Needmore is mostly flat plains. Long ago, these plains were covered in tall grasses. Today, most of this natural grassland has been plowed for farming. Farmers now grow crops like cotton, sorghum, and winter wheat.
South and west of Needmore, you'll find many shallow lakes called "playas". These lakes usually hold water for only a short time after it rains. Then they dry up and stay dry for long periods. Some of the larger playas have salty water. These salty lakes are very important. They provide a safe place for thousands of sandhill cranes and other birds that fly between Canada and Mexico.
Education
Students in Needmore attend schools in two different school districts. These are the Muleshoe Independent School District and the Sudan Independent School District.
