A Look at Circle Back's History
How Circle Back Got Its Name
This community got its name from a special symbol. A cattle ranch nearby used a circle-shaped brand to mark its animals. This brand was used on cattle to the south of the community.
Life in the Early Days
Long ago, Circle Back was a bit busier. It had about a dozen houses. There was also a filling station, which is like a gas station. People could also visit a store that had a post office inside. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It had different people in charge, called postmasters, over the years.
Changes Over Time
The post office in Circle Back closed in 1954. After that, people had to get their mail from a nearby town called Sudan. In 1949, about 100 people lived in Circle Back. The community was important for local cattle and sheep ranches.
A local store owner, Sarah "Zue" Smart, ran the community store. Sadly, the store burned down around 1965. After this, the number of people living in Circle Back started to drop. By 1980, only 49 people lived there. By the mid-1980s, only a few people remained. This included the pastor of the local Baptist church, his wife, and their two children. From 1990 to 2000, the population stayed at 10. By 2014, it had gone down to just 8 people.
Where is Circle Back Located?
Circle Back is found where two roads meet: Farm to Market Road 298 and Farm to Market Road 3397. It is about 66 miles (106 km) northwest of a larger city called Lubbock. It is also about 4 miles (6 km) from another small place called Needmore. Circle Back is in the eastern part of Bailey County.
