A Bit of History
Neely wasn't always called Neely! It was first known as Washington. The community got its new name from C.J. Neely, who was the very first postmaster there. A postmaster is the person in charge of a local post office.
Neely was also an important stop along a railroad line. This railroad was first called the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. Later, it became part of the larger Illinois Central Railroad. Having a train stop meant that goods and people could easily travel to and from Neely. A post office started operating in Neely in 1907.
Famous Faces from Neely
Even small communities can be the birthplace of heroes! Ed Freeman was born in Neely. He was a brave helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. During the Vietnam War, he showed incredible courage in a battle called the Battle of Ia Drang. For his heroic actions, he was given the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award a person can receive for bravery while serving in the U.S. military.
