Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Neil MacKinnon was a very important religious leader in the 1600s. He was the first Protestant minister on the island of Skye. For many years, he served as an Episcopalian minister. He first worked in Strath and later in Sleat.

Early Life and School

Neil MacKinnon was the oldest son of John Og MacKinnon. His family believed he was related to Sir Lachlan MacKinnon of Strath. When Neil was a child, his life was said to be in danger. Clan stories say he hid in a cave for a while. This cave is still known as Slochd Altrimen, which means "the Nursing Cave." Neil went to the University of Glasgow. He earned a Master's degree in 1626.

His Work as a Minister

In 1627, MacKinnon became the minister at Cill Chriosd (or Kilchrist) church in Strath. When he started, he made a promise. He said he would report the names of people who were not Protestant in the islands.

By 1633, he moved to the parish of Sleat. He was confirmed in this role in 1661. MacKinnon was known for his unique way of preaching. He would preach in full Highland dress. He also carried weapons when he went to the pulpit. This was because times were often difficult and unsafe.

The records of the Synod of Argyll described MacKinnon as "a man able in the Gaelic language." This means he was very good at speaking Gaelic. In October 1651, the Synod gave him food. This was partly to thank him for his work. He had translated the Shorter Catechism into Gaelic. It was also because he was in great need.

His Family

Neil MacKinnon married Janet Macleod of Drynoch. They had five sons. One of their sons was named Donald. Donald also became a minister. He served as the minister for the united parishes of Strath and Sleat starting in 1675.
