Neil Maclean was born in 1875. He was a strong believer in socialism, a political idea focused on making society fairer for everyone. He wanted to improve the lives of working people.
Early Political Steps
Maclean started his political journey as the first Secretary of the Socialist Labour Party. However, he left this group in 1908. He then joined the Independent Labour Party (ILP).
In Glasgow, Maclean worked closely with other socialists. They were part of a big movement called Red Clydeside. This movement pushed for better working conditions and social changes.
Standing Up for What's Right
During the First World War, Neil Maclean was a conscientious objector. This means he believed it was wrong to fight in the war and refused to join the military. Many other people from the Red Clydeside movement also held this view.
Maclean was also an organiser for the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society. This group helped people get goods and services fairly. He was a big influence on another important politician, Manny Shinwell.
A Voice for Govan
In the 1918 general election, Neil Maclean was elected to the House of Commons. This is where laws are made in the United Kingdom. He became the MP for Govan, a part of Glasgow.
Many of his friends from the Independent Labour Party later left the Labour Party. But Maclean chose to stay with the Labour Party. For a while, he also worked with the Scottish Socialist Party.
Later Years and Legacy
Neil Maclean continued to serve as an MP until 1950. He decided to retire from Parliament that year. He was offered a seat in the House of Lords, which is another part of the UK Parliament. However, he turned down this offer. He felt that accepting it would go against his socialist beliefs.
He was given an award called a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire). Neil Maclean passed away on 12 September 1953. He is remembered as a dedicated politician who fought for fairness and the rights of working people in Scotland.
