Neil Sidney Trudinger, born on June 20, 1942, is a famous Australian mathematician. He is especially known for his important work on a type of math problem called nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. These are complex equations used to describe many things in the real world, like how heat spreads or how fluids move.

Neil Trudinger's Education and Early Career
Neil Trudinger studied at the University of New England (Australia) in Australia. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), in 1962. After that, he continued his studies at Stanford University in the United States.
In 1966, he earned his Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) from Stanford. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get at a university. His special research for his Ph.D. was on "Quasilinear Elliptical Partial Differential Equations in n Variables."
After getting his Ph.D., Trudinger worked at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University for a year. Then, in 1967, he returned to Australia. He became a lecturer at Macquarie University.
Moving to New Universities
In 1970, Neil Trudinger moved to the University of Queensland. There, he first became a Reader and then a Professor. In 1973, he moved again to the Australian National University (ANU).
At the ANU, he held several important leadership roles. He was the head of the Pure Mathematics Department. He also directed two centers: the Centre for Mathematical Analysis and the Centre for Mathematics and its Applications. In 1992, he became the Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences.
In 2016, he moved to the University of Wollongong. He is currently a Distinguished Professor there.
Important Books and Research
Neil Trudinger is the co-author of an important math book. He wrote it with his Ph.D. advisor, David Gilbarg. The book is called Elliptic Partial Differential Equations of Second Order. This book is very well-known in the field of mathematics.
Awards and Honours
Neil Trudinger has received many awards and honours for his contributions to mathematics:
- In 1978, he was chosen as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. This means he was recognized as a top scientist in Australia.
- In 1981, he was the very first person to receive the Australian Mathematical Society Medal.
- In 1996, he was given the Hannan Medal by the Australian Academy of Science.
- In 1997, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. This is a very prestigious honour for scientists.
- In 2008, he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition. This award was given by the American Mathematical Society.
- In 2012, he was elected as a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
- In 2014, he gave the Łojasiewicz Lecture at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. His lecture was about "Optimal Transportation in the 21st Century."
