A Leader in Irish History

Mary Ellen Humphreys, often called Nell, played a big part in Ireland's fight for independence. She was a leader in a group called Cumann na mBan, which was an organization for women who supported Irish independence. She also became a city councillor in Dublin, helping to make decisions for the city.

Joining the Fight for Freedom

After her brother, The O'Rahilly, died during the Easter Rising in 1916, Nell was arrested and held for a short time. Even after this, she continued to be involved. In 1919, she joined the Ranelagh Branch of Cumann na mBan. This group was very active in supporting the Irish cause.

Working for Dublin City

In 1920, Nell Humphreys was chosen by the people to be a member of the Pembroke Urban District Council. This meant she helped manage local affairs in an area of Dublin. She was elected as a republican, which meant she supported an independent Irish republic.

Challenges During the Civil War

During the Irish Civil War, which happened from 1922 to 1923, Nell was arrested again. She was held from November 1922 until July 1923. This shows how dedicated she was to her beliefs, even when it was difficult.

Remembering Her Legacy

Nell Humphreys passed away on December 2, 1939. Before she died, she arranged for a special stained glass window to be made by the famous artist Harry Clarke. This beautiful window was placed in Mountjoy Prison, where she had been held. The window is still there today, reminding people of her story and the history of Ireland.
