Nelson Peery (born June 22, 1923 – died September 6, 2015) was an American writer and activist. He spent over 60 years working to change society. He was part of several groups that wanted to make America more fair for everyone.

Nelson grew up in rural Minnesota. His father worked for the postal service. His family was the only Black family in their town. As a young man, he traveled across the western United States by train. He then joined the U.S. Army during World War II. These experiences helped him understand problems like racism and how the economy worked. He wrote about them in his book Black Fire: The Making of an American Revolutionary.

After the war, Nelson wrote another book called Black Radical: The Education of an American Revolutionary. This book shares his experiences from 1946 to 1968. It talks about how Black veterans worked for equality after the war. It also covers the fight for freedom during the McCarthy era. Nelson and his family lived in Los Angeles during the 1965 Watts Riots. He passed away on September 6, 2015, when he was 92 years old.
