Neoconservatism (Japan) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Neoconservatism in Japan describes a newer kind of conservative thinking. These thinkers are often called "neoconservatives." They believe Japan is very special and unique.

What is Neoconservatism in Japan?

Japanese neoconservatives are very nationalistic. This means they have a strong love for their country. They believe Japan should be proud of its past and its culture. They want Japan to be a strong and respected nation in the world.

Views on Japan's History

A key part of neoconservative thinking in Japan is how they see history. They often believe that Japan should not apologize for its actions during World War II. This includes events like the Nanjing Massacre or the time when Japan ruled Korea. They think Japan has already apologized enough or that these events are not their responsibility.

Changing Japan's Constitution

After losing World War II, Japan wrote a new rulebook called the Japanese Constitution. A very important part of this rulebook is Article 9. This article says that Japan cannot use war to solve international problems. It also says Japan cannot have a full army, navy, or air force. The USA helped Japan write this rule. They wanted to make sure Japan would not attack other countries again, like the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Japanese neoconservatives want to change Article 9. They believe Japan should have a stronger military. They want the Japanese "Self-Defense Forces" to do more than just defend Japan. They think Japan should be able to use its military to protect its interests around the world. This idea goes against what Article 9 currently says.

Relations with Other Countries

Neoconservatives in Japan often have strong opinions about other countries. They do not always have friendly views toward China. They also tend to have difficult relationships with both North and South Korea. They do not see these relationships as special or needing extra care.

Ideas on Immigration and Voting

Some Japanese neoconservatives also have ideas about who should live in Japan and who should vote. For example, some, like a politician named Shintaro Ishihara, wanted fewer people to move to Japan from other countries. They also believe that only people who are "Japanese nationals" should be allowed to vote. This means they think foreigners living in Japan should not have the right to vote in elections.
