Musical Career
Adam Darski was born in Gdynia, Poland. He began playing the guitar when he was eight years old. As a teenager, he founded the band Behemoth. He chose the stage name Nergal, which is the name of a god from ancient Babylonian mythology.
For Behemoth, Nergal writes the lyrics, composes the music, and is the manager. Besides being the frontman, he also plays lead, rhythm, and acoustic guitars.
Early Projects and Disagreements
In the early days of his career, Nergal was part of a group of musicians called the Temple of Infernal Fire. However, Nergal left the group because he disagreed with the other members about the group's political ideas. He wanted to focus only on music.
This caused some tension between Nergal and other musicians in the Polish metal scene. For a while, he had a disagreement with Rob Darken, the leader of the band Graveland. However, they have since resolved their issues and now have a mutual respect for each other.
Other Music
Besides Behemoth, Nergal has been involved in many other music projects. In the late 1990s, he was the singer and guitarist for a band called Wolverine, where he showed he could also sing in a clean, melodic style.
In 2009, the guitar company ESP released a special guitar designed by Nergal called the "Hex-7."
Nergal also started a project called Me and that Man with musician John Porter. This band plays music in different styles, like country, blues, and folk. Their first album, Songs of Love and Death, came out in 2017. A follow-up album, New Man, New Songs, Same ..., Vol. 1, was released in 2020 and featured guest singers from other famous bands.
Other Activities
Outside of music, Nergal has many other interests. He studied history for six years at the University of Gdańsk and is qualified to be a museum curator.
In 2011, he was a coach on the Polish version of the TV show The Voice of Poland.
In 2012, Nergal was featured on cans of Demon Energy drinks in Poland. He donated most of the money he earned from this to a center that helps find bone marrow donors for sick people.
Since 2014, Nergal has co-owned several barbershops in Poland. In 2015, he opened a nightclub in the city of Sopot. He has also shown his support for Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Personal Life
From 2009 to 2011, Nergal was in a relationship with the Polish pop singer Dorota Rabczewska, who is known as Doda. In 2012, he legally changed his middle name from Michał to his stage name, Nergal.
Battle with Illness
On August 8, 2010, Nergal was taken to a hospital because he was very sick. He was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of cancer. The illness was serious, and Behemoth had to cancel all of their upcoming concerts.
Doctors told him he needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. His fiancée at the time, Doda, offered to donate her marrow, but it was not a match. She and Nergal asked the public for help, and many people signed up to be donors.
A matching donor was found, and on November 8, 2010, Nergal had the transplant surgery. He was released from the hospital on January 16, 2011. A few weeks later, he had to return to the hospital because of an infection, but he recovered. By March 2011, he announced that his health was improving and he was getting better.
