How Did Neroutsos Inlet Get Its Name?
This inlet was officially named on May 3, 1927. It was named after Captain Cyril Demetrius Neroutsos (1868–1954). People often called him "The Skipper." At that time, Captain Neroutsos was in charge of the Coastal Service for the Canadian Pacific Railway. This company operated many ships along the coast.

Captain Cyril Demetrius Neroutsos had an amazing life at sea. He was a very experienced sailor.
An Adventurous Life at Sea
When he was young, Captain Neroutsos sailed all over the world. He took part in famous clipper ship races from New Zealand to London. These races involved sailing around the very southern tip of Africa, called the Cape of Good Hope. He also sailed for trade in Australia, South America, and the East Indies. By the time he was 18 years old, he had sailed around the world four times!
He later joined the British India Steam Navigation Company. During the Gold Rush era, he worked in Seattle. He was the marine superintendent for the Frank Waterhouse Company. This meant he oversaw their ships and sea operations.
A Career with Canadian Pacific
In 1901, Captain Neroutsos joined the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company. He became their marine superintendent. He was serving aboard the ship S.S. Islander in Alaska waters. The S.S. Islander hit an iceberg and sank very quickly. Captain Neroutsos was the only senior officer to survive this event. He continued his important work with the Canadian Pacific Railway's coastal service.
