The Story of Chunky
The Chunky candy bar first appeared in the late 1930s. A candy maker from New York City, Philip Silvershein, created it. Back then, Chunky had milk chocolate, raisins, cashews, and Brazil nuts.
Philip Silvershein was friends with William Wrigley Jr., who made Wrigley's gum. The Wrigley Gum Company helped sell the Chunky bar.
Changes Over Time
In 1984, the company Nestlé took over the Chunky brand. They changed the ingredients to milk chocolate, raisins, and peanuts. This is the recipe we know today!
Later, in 2018, Ferrero SpA bought Nestlé's candy brands in the U.S. This included the Chunky bar. So now, Ferrero's Ferrara Candy Company makes Chunky.
In the 1950s, a Chunky bar cost only five cents. You could also buy a smaller version called the Chunky Cutie for just two cents!
Chunky in Advertisements
Chunky candy bars have been advertised in fun ways over the years.
The "Chunky Square" Pavilion
At the 1964 New York World's Fair, there was a special area called "Chunky Square." Visitors could watch Chunky candy bars being made! There was a factory with glass walls, so everyone could see the process.
"Thicker-er" Commercials
In the early 1970s, a TV commercial for Chunky became very popular. It showed a young boy watching TV with his dad. The boy made people laugh by saying Chunky was "THICKER-ER." This catchy slogan was used for Chunky ads into the 1980s.
Other slogans for Chunky included "Chunky, What a Chunk o' Chocolate." A voice actor named Arnold Stang said this line in a funny, nasal voice. Another slogan was "Open Wide for Chunky."
Different Kinds of Chunky
Over the years, Chunky has come in several flavors and sizes.
- Original: This is the classic Chunky bar with milk chocolate, peanuts, and raisins. It comes in a silver wrapper.
- Pecan Chunky: (No longer made) This bar had milk chocolate and pecans only. It came in a gold wrapper.
- Dark Chunky: (No longer made) This version used dark chocolate with peanuts and raisins. It also had a gold wrapper.
- Deluxe Nut: (No longer made) This Chunky bar was packed with milk chocolate, peanuts, almonds, cashews, and hazelnuts. It came in a gold wrapper.
- Solid Milk Chocolate: (No longer made) This was a simple Chunky bar with just milk chocolate. It had a brown wrapper.
- Miniatures ("Cuties"): (No longer made) These were smaller versions of the original Chunky. They were about 1 inch by 1 inch and came individually wrapped in a bag.
