From Priory to Country Home
Nether Winchendon House was built a long time ago. It stands where an old priory used to be. A priory was a type of monastery, a home for religious people. This priory belonged to a group called the Augustinians. It was connected to a bigger monastery called Notley Abbey.
In the 1500s, a powerful person named Jasper Tudor bought the priory. He was the Duke of Bedford. Jasper Tudor changed the building a lot. He turned the old priory into a large, fancy house.

Later, in 1771, the house was given to Sir Francis Bernard, 1st Baronet. He inherited it after his cousin passed away. Sir Francis Bernard was an important person. He had been a governor in America. He governed the areas of New Jersey and Massachusetts Bay.
His decisions in America were very strict. These decisions helped lead to the American Revolution. This was when the American colonies fought for their independence. The house is still owned by Sir Francis Bernard's family today.
