A drawing of different people with different brains

Neurodiversity is a way of looking at how people's brains work. It means that everyone's brain is a little different. Just like there are many kinds of plants and animals (this is called biodiversity), there are also many kinds of human brains.

Some examples of neurodiverse ways of thinking include autism, Tourette syndrome, and dyslexia. These are not "wrong" ways to think. They are simply different.

What is the Neurodiversity Movement?

The neurodiversity movement is an idea that started in the late 1990s. It suggests that certain brain differences are natural variations in humans. Instead of seeing these differences as problems or "disorders," the movement believes they are just different ways of being.

This idea challenges the old way of thinking. It says that brain differences should be seen as a part of human diversity. This is similar to how we recognize differences in gender or race.

Some people worry that this idea might not help those with very big challenges. For example, some people with autism need a lot of support. These people feel that focusing only on "differences" might ignore the real difficulties some individuals face. They believe the challenges can be much greater than any strengths.
