Nevado de Famatina is a very tall mountain in Argentina. It is also known as Manuel Belgrano. This impressive peak stands at about 6,115 metres (20,062 feet) high. It is the highest point in the Sierra de Famatina mountain range, which is part of the larger Andes mountains.
You can find Nevado de Famatina in the La Rioja Province of Argentina. Its sides reach into the areas of two Argentine cities: Famatina and Chilecito.
First Climbers
The first person known to have successfully climbed Nevado de Famatina was Rudolf Hauthal from Germany. He reached the top on May 20, 1895. This was a big achievement for mountain climbing at that time!
How Tall Is Famatina?
Scientists use special tools to measure the height of mountains. Different ways of measuring can give slightly different results. For Nevado de Famatina:
- One method, called SRTM, measured it at 6,094 metres.
- Another method, ALOS, found it to be 6,066 metres tall.
- A third method, TanDEM-X, measured it at 6,124 metres.
These numbers are all very close, showing that Famatina is indeed a very high mountain!
