The Nevado del Quindío is a tall, inactive volcano located in the middle of Colombia. It's part of the Andes mountain range, which stretches across South America. This mountain is special because its top marks the meeting point of three different areas, called departments: Risaralda, Quindío, and Tolima. It's also the highest point in both Risaralda and Quindío.
Nevado del Quindío is one of the highest peaks inside the Los Nevados National Natural Park. This park is a special place that protects many wild animals and plants. Scientists have never recorded any eruptions from this volcano, which means it has been quiet for a very long time.
Melting Snow and Ice
The snow and glaciers (large sheets of ice) on Nevado del Quindío are slowly shrinking. Since the late 1980s, about ten percent of the snow and ice has disappeared each year. This is likely happening because of global warming, which is causing the Earth's temperature to rise.
Nature and Visitors
Nevado del Quindío offers amazing views that attract many tourists all year round. The lower parts of the mountain are covered by a special type of forest called a cloud forest. These forests are often misty and are home to many unique plant and animal species that can't be found anywhere else in the world.
A famous botanist and naturalist named Alexander von Humboldt visited this area in 1801. He studied the plants and animals and discovered many new species, including a plant called the frailejón.
