Lieutenant Colonel Neville Bowes Elliott-Cooper, VC, DSO, MC (born January 22, 1889 – died February 11, 1918) was a very brave officer in the British Army. He was from England and received the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest award given for amazing bravery when facing the enemy. It can be awarded to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries.

Early Life and Military Start

Neville Bowes Elliott-Cooper was born in London on January 22, 1889. He was the youngest son of Sir Robert Elliott-Cooper, who was a civil engineer. His father helped build railways.

School Days

Neville went to Eton College from 1901 to 1907. While there, he joined the Eton College Volunteers. This was a group that helped students learn about military life.

Joining the Army

After Eton, he went to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous place where people train to become army officers. In October 1908, when he was 19, he became a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. This was a regiment in the British Army. Before World War I started, he served with his regiment in different parts of the world. He was stationed in places like South Africa, Mauritius, and India.

Bravery in World War I

Neville Bowes Elliott-Cooper showed incredible courage during World War I. He was 28 years old and was leading the 8th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.

The Victoria Cross Award

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on November 30, 1917. This happened east of La Vacquerie, near Cambrai, France. It was during a big battle called the Battle of Cambrai. The Victoria Cross is given for the most outstanding bravery.
