New Amsterdam is a small, unincorporated community located in the town of Holland. You can find it in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government.

The Story of New Amsterdam

Early Settlers and Growth

New Amsterdam got its start in 1853. That year, 86 original settlers from the Netherlands (a country in Europe, also known as Holland) decided to make this area their new home. They brought their culture and traditions with them.

The community grew steadily during the 1850s. As more people arrived, they needed services. In 1855, New Amsterdam opened its first post office. This made it easier for people to send and receive letters.

Community Meetings and Local Government

By 1858, the community was organized enough to hold its first town hall meeting. A town hall meeting is where local citizens gather to discuss important issues and make decisions about their community. This was a big step for New Amsterdam, showing it was becoming a well-established place.
