The Battle of New Bern: A Key Moment
The Battle of New Bern was a big event in the American Civil War. It happened on March 14, 1862. During this battle, soldiers from the Union Army fought against soldiers from the Confederate Army. The Union Army won this battle.
This victory was important for the Union. It helped them gain control of parts of eastern North Carolina. This control was useful for their war efforts. The battle site today helps us remember these events.
What is the Battlefield Site?
The New Bern Battlefield Site is made up of two separate areas. These areas are where the fighting took place. In 2001, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical location.
Preserving History: New Bern Battlefield Park
A group called the New Bern Historical Society owns part of the battlefield. They protect about 27 acres of the site. This protected area is known as New Bern Battlefield Park.
The park has a visitor center. It also has a monument to remember the battle. You can arrange for a guided tour of the park. This lets you learn more about what happened there. The Society's website also offers brochures for self-guided tours.
Protecting More of the Battlefield
Another group, the Civil War Trust, has also helped. This group is now part of the American Battlefield Trust. They and their partners have worked to save more of the battlefield. They have protected about 25 acres of the site. This helps make sure these important historical lands are kept safe for the future.
