New Burlington was once a small town in Clinton County, Ohio. It was located in the northwest part of the county, near Ohio State Route 380. Today, New Burlington is no longer a town. The U.S. government bought the land in the 1970s. This happened when Caesar Creek was dammed to create a large lake called a reservoir.
The Story of New Burlington
New Burlington was planned and built in 1833. Its name came from Burlington, North Carolina. Many of the first people who settled here were from that city. A post office opened in New Burlington in 1837. It helped people send and receive mail for many years, until 1971.
New Burlington and the Underground Railroad
New Burlington was also an important "station" on the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network of safe houses and routes. It helped enslaved people escape to freedom before the American Civil War.
